A reckless driver suspected of being under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs led deputies on chase through East San Gabriel and into East Los Angeles before he was arrested when he ditched the car and tried to escape on foot.

It was not immediately clear when and where the chase started, but the driver was seen speeding on city streets and freeways in East San Gabriel, East Los Angeles and Boyle Heights as a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department helicopter followed overhead.

Deputies in cruisers were also following the vehicle, but from a distance.

The chase ended about 11:20 a.m. when the suspect exited the Golden State (5) Freeway in Boyle Heights and drove on a median beneath a freeway interchange, stopped under a bridge and fled.
