Police are investigating a hate crime incident after a footballer was allegedly subjected to homophobic abuse during a Scottish League Two match at the weekend. ‌

Edinburgh City travelled to Borough Briggs on Saturday, August 23, against Elgin City, where a home supporter was ejected by match officials for abuse against Citizens goalkeeper Mark Weir. ‌

Elgin City confirmed earlier in the week that an investigation was underway with the football club taking the “strongest possible action”. ‌

Police Scotland have since confirmed they are treating the incident as a hate crime, with extensive enquiries ongoing.

Inspector Andy Meikleham, of Elgin Police Office, said: “This was a despicable action and we are now following a positive line of enquiry.
