Statistics show that violent crime often spikes during the warmer months, but leaders in one Delaware County community say the number of homicides this summer is significantly lower than last year.

Those who live in the city of Chester, Pennsylvania, are seeing fewer officers in patrol cars and more walking the streets.

Officials say they’re engaging with neighborhoods, building relationships and trust and the numbers show it’s working.

"What we’ve seen through this period compared to last year is that wow, this is a period of reduction," Chester Mayor Stefan Roots told NBC10.
