The Fairbanks North Star Borough School District Board of Education discussed a resolution affirming its commitment to providing public education for all students, regardless of immigration status, during a work session Monday night.
After Fairbanks resident Atcharee Buntow was detained by ICE on Aug. 7, FNSBSD Superintendent Luke Meinert sent an email on Aug. 14 assuring families that “our district is committed to providing a safe, welcoming, and high-quality education to every student, regardless of race, color, national origin, citizenship, or immigration status.”
The resolution, titled “Safe Spaces, Strong Futures: Standing with Our Immigrant School Community,” was drafted by school board members Bobby Burgess and Meredith Maple.
