A leak in a liquid nitrogen tank prompted a hazardous-materials response Thursday at a science building on the campus of USC, but no injuries were reported.
The leak was reported around noon at the Frank R. Seaver Science Center at 920 Bloom Walk, according to USC and the Los Angeles Fire Department.
L.A. Fire Department and USC HazMat teams responded to the scene and secured the tank by about 12:35 p.m., an LAFD spokeswoman said.
She described the situation as “static.”
USC issued a statement Thursday afternoon saying, “The hazardous materials incident at Frank R. Seaver Science Center at UPC (University Park Campus) has concluded. University operations have returned to normal.”
Liquid nitrogen is used as a cooling and freezing agent in many laboratory applications.
