CNN host Erin Burnett was stunned at a remark the White House made about the war in Ukraine on Thursday.
Burnett's remarks come after Kyiv, Ukraine, was hit by a barrage of Russian missiles overnight. Reports indicate 22 people were killed in the strike, and it damaged the European Union's nearby headquarters.
During a press briefing on Thursday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt claimed that it seems like "both sides" are not ready to end the war yet.
Leavitt's comments stunned Burnett.
"Whoa," she said. "Both sides? Putin struck Ukraine overnight and hit Ukraine with 598 drones and 31 missiles. This is not a both-sides issue. Not last night. Not tonight. And not since February 2022, when Putin invaded a sovereign country with the intent to topple its government, take it over, and make it part of Russia."
Burnett's comments come weeks after President Donald Trump met with Russian President Vladimir Putin to negotiate ending the war in Ukraine. The war has raged for over 3 1/2 years.
Following the meeting, Trump said he was hopeful that Putin would "do a deal" to end the war. However, Russian officials have rejected many of the terms Trump has laid out to end the war.
"Maybe the 'both sides' talk comes as Trump has publicly given Putin space on this war," Burnett added.
