There are nearly 3,000 dams across Massachusetts, and 5 Investigates found that some of them are not only in poor condition, but the loss of property and life would be significant if they failed.

This means its failure would likely cause loss of life downstream.

The state also tracks the conditions of its dams, and Brick City Mill Pond Dam has been deemed unsafe, which is the worst designation.

Statewide, our analysis of state inspection data for a total of 1,529 dams revealed that 65 dams are in an unsafe condition.

Nine of those unsafe dams are also in the high-hazard category.
