BOARDMAN, Ore. – A dumpster fire involving chemicals erupted at Riverside High School this evening, prompting a swift response from fire crews.

At 5:24 p.m., multiple units arrived on the scene where a large construction dumpster was fully engulfed in flames, threatening nearby structures, Boardman Fire Rescue District said in a release .

School staff had already evacuated students and athletes from the activity building as a precaution.

The district said the fire was particularly challenging due to the presence of chemicals used in the new gym floor installation, but firefighters successfully contained most of the damage to the dumpster.
