LANSING – Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on Thursday declared a state of emergency for Houghton and Ontonagon counties after an extreme rainfall event in late July caused widespread flooding, severely damaged roads and infrastructure, and exhausted local response capabilities.
On July 23, Houghton County received up to 4 inches of rain over a four-hour period, causing flash flooding that damaged public infrastructure, including roads, culverts and storm sewers. Impacts were reported in Chassell Township, Torch Lake Township, Stanton Township and the city of Houghton
