(WENY) -- A four-hour work zone crackdown on Interstate 81 in Broome County ended with more than 100 tickets.

The joint detail between New York State Police and the Broome County Sheriff’s Office took place in the Town of Chenango on Thursday. Troopers dressed as construction workers inside an active bridge repair zone, watching for distracted and reckless drivers.

NYSP says in total, 109 tickets were issued, including:

36 for speeding, with the highest clocked at 87 mph in a 55 mph zone

27 for cellphone use

27 for seatbelt violations

19 for other offenses

The program, called Operation Hard Hat, is meant to remind drivers to slow down and pay attention in work zones. Officials say reduced speed limits, clear signage, and patience behind the wheel
