At Acrisure Stadium on Saturday, an old rivalry will be renewed: the original “City Game” between the University of Pittsburgh and Duquesne University — though not like the last time they met. The game was last played on October 21, 1939, and was won by Duquesne 21–13.

Back then, both universities had major football teams. In 1936, Duquesne won the Orange Bowl and Pitt won the Rose Bowl, earning the Lambert trophy, symbolic of Eastern football supremacy, and finishing third nationally. That year, Duquesne upset Pitt 7–0, costing legendary Coach Jock Sutherland’s eventual Rose Bowl Champion Panthers the National Championship.
