The Saugeen First Nation says it’s the end of a 35-year legal battle and a larger struggle that has lasted nearly two centuries.

On Thursday, the Supreme Court of Canada said it will not hear an appeal of lower-court rulings that deemed a popular stretch of Sauble Beach to be within the boundaries of the First Nation’s reserve.

In April 2023, Ontario Superior Court Justice Susan Vella recognized that an additional 2.4-kilometre strip of the busy tourist beach, from the Sauble Beach sign at the end of Main Street to about 6th Street North, “is and always has been part of Saugeen First Nation’s reserve.”

On Canada Day this year, Saugeen First Nation band members from the beach committee changed the iconic sign to read “Saugeen Beach.”
