Two 17-year-old boys have been charged with second-degree murder following the shooting death of a 19-year-old man at Scarborough Town Centre in Toronto. The incident occurred on August 21 around 1:50 p.m. when police responded to reports of a shooting at the mall.
Officers found Daniel Amalathas, 19, suffering from a gunshot wound in a family washroom near the food court. He was pronounced dead at the scene. This incident marks the 27th homicide in Toronto for the year.
On Thursday, police arrested the two teenagers in connection with the investigation. They are scheduled to appear in court at the Ontario Court of Justice on Armoury Street on Friday at 10 a.m. The identities of the accused cannot be released due to the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
Authorities have not disclosed a motive for the shooting or the circumstances surrounding it. A firearm was recovered near the scene, and police initially considered the death suspicious due to a lack of witnesses and reports of gunfire.
