MONROE, La. (KNOE) - On Aug. 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina hit Louisiana with a punch that was felt state-wide.

More than 1.5 million people were evacuated in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama.

Thousands made their way into Northeast Louisiana and Southeast Arkansas. Volunteers from throughout the region worked to host them in their homes or in quickly assembled shelters.

LSU’s research shows around 40% of those evacuated never returned home and restarted their lives elsewhere.
