Sept. 2, 2025, is the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. The people of Northern Nevada had a little noted, but prominent, role on the occasion that marked America’s victory.
On that date in 1945, representatives of Japan signed articles of surrender aboard the battleship USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. Sailors filled with pride wanted a souvenir to show they were present at the historic place and date. With limited manufacturing options available, they produced humble postcards to be mailed to friends and loved ones. They decorated the postcards with a picture of a saddle — a gift and symbol of patriotism from the people of Washoe County for Admiral “Bull” Halsey to use when riding the Japanese emperor’s white horse.
