Several Michigan beaches are under bacteria advisories — or are closed — as Michiganders head into the start of the Labor Day weekend.

In a state with more than 1,000 beaches, state officials say seven public and private beaches in counties across both peninsulas aren't fit for swimming as of Friday, Aug. 29 — likely because of wildlife contamination, according to the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy, which provides information via an online dashboard.

Beaches with closures or advisories

Michiganders who are looking to visit their local beach should avoid these:

Four Mile Beach, Chippewa County

L'Anse Waterfront Park, Baraga County

Lake Angela Co-Op, Oakland County

Newburgh Lake, Hines Park, Wayne County

Seven Lakes State Park, Oakland County
