JACKSON — A Jackson man pleaded guilty Wednesday in federal court to attempting to rob a dollar store in the city.

According to court documents and statements made in court, Torrance Stewart, 31, entered a local business on May 2, 2022, intending to commit an armed robbery. He brandished a pistol and threatened a store clerk, demanding money from the cash register. When the register malfunctioned, Stewart fled on foot. Officers with the Jackson Police Department apprehended him in a nearby neighborhood.

Stewart is scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 15 and faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. A federal judge will determine the sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
