A Corpus Christi Republican on Thursday announced he is jumping into the primary for Texas’ 34th Congressional District.

Fred Hinojosa, who describes himself as a longtime Republican activist, said in a campaign announcement that he has spent more than a decade helping elect Corpus Christi, Coastal Bend and Rio Grande Valley conservatives.

“Now, he is stepping forward to lead the fight himself,” the announcement stated.

He notes that his brother is Adam Hinojosa, who represents Texas Senate District 27 was the first Republican to represent the Valley “since the Reconstruction Era.”

Fred Hinojosa said his brother was backed by President Donald Trump, Gov. Greg Abbott, Attorney General Ken Paxton and Lieutenant Gov. Dan Patrick.
