WASHINGTON —
Iowa Republican Sen. Joni Ernst has decided not to seek reelection for a third term, according to reports from CBS News and CNN, and will reportedly make an announcement next week.
Ernst has been wrestling with the decision for months, but began telling friends in recent days. The move would create an open Senate seat in Iowa.
Rep. Ashley Hinson is making plans to jump into the race, one GOP official says. GOP primary challengers already include former state Sen. Jim Carlin and Navy veteran Joshua Smith.
A crowded field of Democrats is already running, including Des Moines School Board Chair Jackie Norris; Nathan Sage, a former chamber of commerce president; and state Rep. Josh Turek.
CBS first reported Ernst’s decision.
