BEAUMONT, Texas — Fletcher Elementary School was placed under a shelter-in-place order Friday as the Beaumont Fire Department responded to a gas leak near the campus.
The gas leak happened near the intersection of Goliad and Avenue F and officials ordered a shelter- in-place as a precautionary measure.
The gas leak is near the campus rather than on school property itself. No injuries have been reported, according to Jackie Simien.
The natural gas leak was over 500 feet away from the elementary school and did not pose a threat to students or staff, according to the Beaumont ISD police chief. However, a strong odor entered through the school's HVAC system. Maintenance assisted in addressing the odor inside the school, according to officials.
