FREEPORT, Long Island (PIX11) -- A lone alligator was rescued in Freeport on Aug. 7, according to the Department of Environmental Conservation.

The juvenile alligator was discovered in a freshwater pond at Cow Meadow Preserve by a local birdwatcher.

Environmental Conservation Police Officers responded to the location with a canoe and safely captured the alligator.

The reptile was taken to a local rehabilitator licensed to care for alligators and remains there awaiting permanent relocation.

An investigation is ongoing to locate the individual or individuals who unlawfully released the alligator.

The DEC reminds New Yorkers that it is illegal to import, possess, or sell any alligator, caiman, or crocodile without proper DEC permits.
