FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – The cause of the “Garnet Fire” has been released by the Sierra National Forest as containment on the blaze went up for the first time.

According to the Forest Service, the “Garnet Fire” that started early Sunday morning was caused by lightning.

In an update on Friday, officials say the fire is 8% contained and has burned around 16,467 acres, three miles southeast of Balch Camp.

A total of 1,128 personnel are working to control the Garnet Fire. The fire was active overnight around the Balch Power Plant.

Fresno County has already declared a state of emergency due to what was described as a “challenging” wildfire.

Residents and visitors to the fire area are asked to exercise caution on roadways and to be aware of firefighter vehicles and personnel.
