Police in Newport, Vt. arrested a man on domestic terrorism charges Thursday for allegedly making bomb threats to a local high school, the department said.

Cypher Aiken, 25, of Newport, is charged with threatening a civilian population with mass destruction and mass killings, Newport Police Department said in a statement.

At 12:23 p.m., police were notified that Aiken made a text message threat which said he planted bombs inside North Country Union High School, the statement said.

The high school was evacuated and searched by police. Other schools in Newport were also placed on lockdown until Aiken was in custody, police said.

It was later determined that Aiken did not have any explosives, police said.
