The 2025 college football season will be an important one for both Baylor and Auburn.

Following back-to-back losing seasons, Dave Aranda seemed to right the ship with the Bears with an 8-5 record during the 2025 season. On the flipside, the Tigers are looking to avoid a fifth-straight losing season and the third straight under Hugh Freeze.

Baylor and Auburn are scheduled to kick off their respective seasons at 8 p.m. ET on Friday, Aug. 29, from McLane Stadium in Waco, Texas. This marks the first matchup between the schools since a 15-14 Bears win on Sept. 18, 1976.

Eric Singleton Jr., Alex McPherson travel with Auburn

According to the Montgomery Advertiser, both wide receiver Eric Singleton Jr. and kicker Alex McPherson have traveled with Auburn to Waco, Texas, for tonight's game. Hugh Freeze previously indicated McPherson was a game-time decision. He was kicking from around 35 yards out in pregame.

Singleton did not have a wrap around his leg while warming up.

Cam Coleman ended freshman season on high note

Cam Coleman was a star as a freshman for Auburn, but he really came on at the end of the season. In the final three games for the Tigers, Coleman had 22 receptions for 306 yards and six touchdowns against Louisiana-Monroe, Texas A&M and Alabama.

In his first eight collegiate games, Coleman had 15 catches for 292 yards and two TDs.

Coleman was the No. 3 overall player in the 2024 recruiting class, behind only Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith and Georgia defensive back Ellis Robinson IV, according to 247 Sports Composite rankings.

Sawyer Robertson earns start for Baylor vs Auburn

Sawyer Robertson will earn the start for Baylor against Auburn in the season opener. Last season, Robertson completed 229 of 368 passes (62.2%) for 3,071 yards, 28 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

He’s in his fourth year of college football, with stops at Mississippi State and Baylor. He’s completed 301 of 496 passes (60.7%) for 3,958 yards, 30 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.

Former Oklahoma QB Jackson Arnold starting for Auburn

Jackson Arnold is the starting QB for Auburn for the 2025 season opener. The former Oklahoma signal-caller won the job after transferring in from the Sooners over the offseason.

As a sophomore, Arnold completed 154 of 246 passes (62.6%) for 1,421 yards, 12 touchdowns and three interceptions last year for Oklahoma. He took 34 sacks.

For his career, Arnold has completed 198 of 315 passes (62.9%) for 1,984 yards, 16 touchdowns and six interceptions.

Baylor 4-1 in season openers since 2020 under Dave Aranda

Since Dave Aranda took over as the Baylor coach in 2020, the Bears are 4-1 in season openers. The lone loss was a 42-31 loss to Texas State on the road in 2023. Baylor finished that season 3-9.

The Bears opened the 2024 season with a 45-3 win over Tarleton State. Baylor faces a much stiffer test with Auburn to open the 2025 season.

Auburn undefeated in season openers under Hugh Freeze

It's not about how you start, it's about how you finish. Auburn is 2-0 with wins over UMass and Alabama A&M in two season openers under coach Hugh Freeze. However, the Tigers have finished with 6-7 and 5-7 records the last two years, respectively.

This will be the first time Auburn opens the season on the road under Freeze and the first time in a true road game season opener since 2002, when it played USC.
