Governor Mike Dunleavy is calling on the Alaska Legislature to take action on education reform, citing the state’s low national ranking.

In a letter sent this week , Governor Dunleavy criticized lawmakers for what he calls persistent inaction on improving educational outcomes for Alaska’s students.

Alaska currently ranks 51st in the nation in overall education performance. The governor says simply increasing funding is not enough without meaningful policy changes to address systemic issues.

“Every single year is invaluable for a child's learning,” Dunleavy wrote. “Alaska's education system can do better, and we can do better right now.”

He also warned that if the legislature does not act during the next regular session, he is prepared to call additional special sessions until reforms
