DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was under new leadership Friday as Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. made an attempt to quell the growing concern among employees at the world’s leading public health agency.
After serving the shortest tenure ever as CDC director – less than a month – infectious disease expert Susan Monarez was fired earlier in the week by President Donald Trump. The move was a startlingly rare case of the White House involving itself in personnel decisions at the normally apolitical agency.
Monarez was swiftly replaced with Jim O’Neill, who most recently served as Deputy Secretary of Health and Human Services, working directly under Secretary Kennedy.
