LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- Today marks 20 years since Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast, with the Cajundome in Lafayette serving as a crucial shelter for thousands of evacuees.

Hurricane Katrina displaced more than 1.5 million people across the Gulf Coast, leaving many without homes and some without their lives. The former director of Cajundome, Greg Davis, reflected how the arena became a shelter for refugees.

"That sheltering operation ended up becoming something that was beyond anything that I imagined when we first got that phone call," said Davis.

As shelters across the region became overwhelmed, the state of Louisiana turned to the Cajundome to provide refuge for those in need.
