A high-risk violent offender has been arrested and is facing charges after a Metro Vancouver Transit Police (MVTP) officer was assaulted on Wednesday.

At approximately 5:30 p.m., the officer approached 30-year-old Shakwan David Kelly outside Waterfront Station to discuss his open use of illicit drugs.

“During the interaction, Kelly allegedly charged at the police officer, striking him in the face and body,” the MVTP said.

“The officer used a Conducted Energy Weapon (CEW), but with no effect.”

Kelly fled, but was arrested nearby.

The officer suffered minor physical injuries and was taken to the hospital.
