FARGO — The 2025 North Dakota harvest season is as abnormal as they come, according to a crop specialist.

Heavy rain, wind and hail throughout the summer have caused significant crop losses across the state.

But Jeff Stachler, an NDSU Extension cropping system specialist, said yields will still be above average for canola, wheat, barley, sunflower and corn.

Stachler pointed to the protein content in wheat as an example of this year’s variety. It is higher on the eastern side of the state and lower on the western side.

He said soybeans will not be as lucky.
