A policy that would have allowed the City of Melville to plant trees on its verges whether residents wanted them or not has been delayed.

The council asked in April for its tree policy to be amended so that trees could be planted on its verges except where there was a valid reason, and for a review of challenges to tree removal and prosecutions for tree damage.

The new policy was prepared in July and scheduled to be presented at the August meeting, but staff asked for more time as new information had been received.

The council voted 7-2 to push the policy back until March next year at the latest after an attempt by Cr Scott Green to adopt it now was knocked back.

The vote on Cr Green’s proposal was deadlocked at 5-all before mayor Katy Mair used her casting vote to reject it.
