Canadian businesses can no longer ship small packages to the U.S. duty-free, as of Friday, and some small businesses are unsure what will happen next, while others are shutting down their online stores to U.S. buyers.

U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order back in July to end the de minimis exemption. The exemption allowed small businesses to deliver goods to the states valued under USD$800 to enter the country without extra fees.

On Canada Post’s website, the company gives customers an example of what the new fees look like for the average item shipped.

For example, if a business decides to ship a $57 Canadian-made cardigan through Canada Post to a U.S. customer, the 35 per cent fee will add another $19.95 on top of regular shipping fees.
