ESSEX JUNCTION, Vt. (WCAX) - It’s back-to-school week across Vermont, and kids are lacing up their shoes and heading to school. Crossing guards line the corners to make sure students get there, safe and sound. Our John McMahon caught up with one crossing guard who’s proof it’s never too late to build your future and make sure others have a chance to build theirs.

For 11 years, Robert Murtha has started his day getting kids across the street safely. The 62-year-old retiree is a crossing guard for the Essex Westford School District. He joined up in retirement.

“Well, I was bored,” Murtha said. “My wife had just passed away, unfortunately. So, I was just sitting around and I thought, ‘Why not?”
