A half hour past noon on Friday, when students all over Portland Public Schools were released from school early due to the heat, it was a balmy 72 degrees, with an ever-so-slight cloud cover.

In fact, Friday was the coolest day of the week. Yet district leaders made the call for an early dismissal due to heat, after not having done so during the previous three school days, when temperatures were higher.
