ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - A report of an “armed shooter” on the University of Georgia campus appears to be a hoax, according to campus police.

The school said the shooter was reported “in the area of the Main Library” at 8:51 p.m. Friday.

At 9:34 p.m., UGA police said “evidence suggests a hoax.”

“At approximately 8:45 pm the UGA Police Department Communications Center received a call of a shooter in the area of the UGA Library. Officers quickly responded and searched the area. A preliminary investigation suggests the event was a hoax, but officers remain in the vicinity to investigate and collect information,” police said.

People are encouraged to avoid the area.
