Payton Tolle made his debut with the Boston Red Sox on Friday night, taking part in a pitchers’ duel between himself and Pittsburgh Pirates star Paul Skenes. Tolle struck out eight batters over 5.1 innings, tying him for the most in an MLB debut by a Red Sox pitcher alongside Daisuke Matsuzaka, who struck out eight in 2007.

Ceddanne Rafaela opened up scoring with an RBI single, and Roman Anthony hit his third home run in five games to bring the score to 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth. But the Pirates surged back against the Red Sox bullpen, scoring three runs on the bats of Tommy Pham and Andrew McCutchen in the sixth inning, and a fourth by Henry Davis in the eighth. The Pirates beat the Red Sox 3-2.
