Walker Buehler signed a $20 million contract with the Boston Red Sox during the past winter, but he wasn’t able to meet expectations.

Buehler lost his rotation spot a few days ago, and ultimately he also lost his roster spot on Friday. The Red Sox released the veteran pitcher; he wasn’t even designated for assignment. The team gave him the opportunity to look for another opportunity on a contender, and he only has 72 hours to be able to play in October.

«we had the expectation and anticipated being able to give him plenty of time to get used to that role,” said chief baseball officer Craig Breslow on Friday. “And to pitch his way to leverage spots. But the circumstances around the roster kind of changed.”
