A Surrey pioneer is the subject of an exhibit at the Museum of Surrey.
The life and legacy of Katerina (Kate) Cindrich, who came to Canada in 1937, is being featured in the Museum’s “Show and Share” space.
This display contains numerous artifacts from pioneer life and later years.
Kate, who passed away in 2003, was one of a group of pioneers that had farmland in the Whalley area and painstakingly cleared the land over several years. Affectionately calling themselves “stump farmers,” they had to make fields out of previously logged land.
Arrival
Kate and Josip arrived in Surrey in 1943. They walked across the Pattullo Bridge with their four-month-old baby in their arms. The Croatian immigrants, from the then Yugoslavia, were delighted to own some land
