ATHENS, Ga. — University of Georgia Police issued an all-clear after reports of an armed shooter on campus was confirmed as hoax.
Police said at around 8:51 p.m., officers received a call of a shooter in the UGA main library area.
Officials said the report was similar to the numerous swatting incidents that have occurred at university and college campuses nationwide.
UGA Police were able to use security cameras along with officers patrolling the area to verify that there was no active threat.
The university released the following statement regarding this 'dangerous and unlawful act:
"We strongly condemn hoax reports and swatting attempts. These false reports cause unnecessary fear and divert critical emergency resources."
At around 10:40 p.m., UGA Police sent out an all-clear alert.
