It was a chance remark from a friend that prompted writer David Lindsay-Abaire to conjure up the character Kimberly Akimbo.

“I asked him about a new niece in his family, and he said, ‘Oh, she’s amazing. It’s like she’s this wise old woman trapped in a baby’s body,’” he recalled. “And I remember thinking at the time that that was a strange thing to say about a baby.

“But being the very literal-minded person that I am, I started imagining what it would be like for an old woman to trapped in a baby’s body,” Lindsay-Abaire said. “Then I thought what if this baby isn’t a baby, but a teenager who looks like an old lady. And I thought there was something really theatrical about that because it would be an amazing role for an older actress to play.
