Those planning a beach trip in Massachusetts for Labor Day weekend should make sure their favorite spot is open.
According to the Department of Public Health (DPH) , 49 beaches are closed to the public, mostly due to high levels of bacteria in the water. This includes Memorial Beach in Natick, Beamans Pond in Templeton and Damon Pond Beach in Ashby.
Other beaches closed on Saturday were due to harmful cyanobacteria, or algae, blooms. Algae produce toxins in the water and can cause harm to people and animals who enter the water.
These blooms have caused beaches to close, including Cliff Pond in Brewster, Centennial Grove in Essex and Seymour Pond in Harwich.
