BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- The Kern County Fair is just weeks from opening its gates, but first, some of those gates got a little bit of new paint.

Saturday was Community Paint Day hosted by Upside Academy. Teens who needed some community service hours volunteered at the Kern County Fairgrounds on Saturday morning painting barns and give areas a facelift.

"The FFA students and the 4-H students, they work hard training and caring for their livestock. We want them to come to an environment that they don't have to worry about anything. That it's clean, it's painted and ready to show and compete at the Kern County Fair," Natesha Johnson, president of Upside Academy, said.

The Kern County Fair begins Sept. 17.
