Ann Arbor — When Michigan’s team bus arrived at the stadium for the season opener Saturday, freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood exited just ahead of two-time captain Max Bredeson.

But Underwood, who became the fourth freshman to start at quarterback for Michigan, did the most freshman of things and headed to the right toward the opposing locker room entrance before his teammates got his attention and directed him the right way.

These things happen, but with Underwood, the nation’s top-rated recruit in the 2025 class who has been hyped since he flipped his commitment to Michigan last November, everything is under a microscope. Especially his first start.
