After gaining just 135 yards in last week's loss to Mooresville , the Bloomington North offense needed a pick-me-up.

So, new head football coach Brett Cooper reached into his bag of tricks (plays) and came up with two that burned Bedford North Lawrence in a 29-20 win on Friday, Aug. 29, his first with the Cougars (1-1). From there, the defense did a great job posting a shutout of the red-hot Stars (1-1) in the second half.

"Our kids gritted out a tough ballgame against a much, much improved BNL team from 2024," Cooper said. "They're good. Really good. And that offense is dangerous.

"We put (quarterback Dayson Kirby) on the move early and he caused some chaotic, credit to them. But we bent but didn't break in the second half."

Not surprisingly, multipurpose senior Luke Freel was key
