GALVESTON, Texas (KIAH) -- A waterspout was spotted off the coast of Galveston Island on Saturday afternoon, close to the Seawall.

A webcam from the Saltwater Recon website captured the moment the waterspout appeared, near the beach at 45th Street just before 1 p.m. Saturday. Reports said that the waterspout moved on to the beach, blowing umbrellas and chairs around on the beach. No injuries were reported.

According to the National Weather Service, a waterspout is a tornado “that form over water, or move from land to water. They have the same characteristics as a land tornado.” They form during severe thunderstorms and usually bring strong winds and lightning.

Most waterspouts dissipate rapidly when they make landfall, the NWS says. But if they do move inland, they become a tornado.
