The Toronto Blue Jays have added infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa to their roster as they aim to strengthen their infield for the playoff push. The team announced on Sunday that they claimed Kiner-Falefa off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates, who released him last week.

Kiner-Falefa, 30, previously played for the Blue Jays last season, appearing in 83 games before being traded to the Pirates at the trade deadline. Over his eight-year career in Major League Baseball, he has participated in 901 games with teams including the Texas Rangers, New York Yankees, Blue Jays, and Pirates.

This season, Kiner-Falefa has played 119 games with the Pirates, achieving a batting average of .264. He has recorded 23 extra-base hits, 35 runs batted in, and 15 stolen bases. The Blue Jays will take on the remainder of his one-year, $7.5 million contract, which he originally signed with them as part of a two-year, $15 million deal prior to the 2024 season. He is eligible to be included on the playoff roster.

To accommodate Kiner-Falefa, the Blue Jays transferred pitcher Yimi Garcia to the 60-day injured list as he is set to undergo season-ending elbow surgery. Kiner-Falefa's addition provides the Blue Jays with valuable infield depth, especially as Ernie Clement has been dealing with injuries.

Kiner-Falefa is expected to join the Blue Jays in Cincinnati for their upcoming three-game series against the Reds, starting Monday afternoon.
