The Phillies have agreed to a deal with right-hander Walker Buehler on Sunday, a source told MLB.com. The club has not yet confirmed the news.
In a surprise move, Buehler was released by the Red Sox on Friday. He had pitched to a 5.45 ERA through 23 appearances (22 starts) and was on pace for career lows in several statistics, including strikeouts per nine innings (6.7) and strikeout/walk ratio (1.53), which had led to Boston moving him to the bullpen on Aug. 22.
But the 31-year-old also displayed flashes of brilliance as recently as Aug. 8 against the Padres, when he fired six scoreless innings.
Buehler will be eligible to pitch in the postseason, as players must be on the 40-man roster or 60-day injured list as of 11:59 pm ET on Aug. 31.
