WACO, Texas (KWTX) - Dove hunting season is set to kick off on Sept. 1.

According to Texas Parks and Wildlife, the Mourning Dove population in the state is nearing a record high.

Game Warden Dustin Delgado says weather patterns throughout this year have laid the groundwork for a busy season.

“I’d say opening day is very busy for us,” said Delgado.

“With our spring rains and summer rains, that has definitely helped our wildlife population, so we expect a good turnout.”

Delgado says some of the biggest keys to making sure you’re prepared for a new season are making sure your hunting license is valid, as well as taking the required safety courses.

“We run into hunters that have lots of experience, we run into hunters that have very little, or no experience,” said Delgado.
