ATLANTA — In poetic fashion, Beamer Ball shined through for South Carolina football in the season-opening 24-11 win over Virginia Tech .

Coach Shane Beamer faced the Hokies , for whom he played (1995-99) and served as an assistant for his father Frank Beamer (2011-15). Frank Beamer coached Virginia Tech for 29 seasons and put a major emphasis on special teams, which coined the term "Beamer Ball," now a mantra used by Shane Beamer at South Carolina.

On Aug. 31, the No. 13 Gamecocks led by just two points before Vicari Swain returned a punt for an 80-yard touchdown, stretching the lead to 17-8 with 13 minutes left in the game. Swain is a redshirt sophomore who played in the secondary in 13 games in 2024.
