Hazel Park required overtime but defeated Detroit Loyola 28-22 in last Thursday night’s season opener.
The Vikings’ defense produced a fourth-down stop initially in OT, and later Montrell Parker followed his blocking at the first and second levels on a 10-yard run from a direct snap, which gave Hazel Park the victory.
Picking up from a junior year in which he rushed for over 1,700 yards, Parker carried 21 times for 205 yards and three of the Vikings’ scores in the victory. Lathan Chambers combined for 100 yards on seven touches, including a 35-yard TD pass from Kishaun Stewart, who rushed for 35 yards.
The Vikings, who finished 7-4 last season, travel to Marysville in Week 2 before digging into MAC Bronze play.
