AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - South Carolina drivers will now need to keep their hands on the wheel and off their phones under the state’s new hands-free driving law.
Enforcement of the change, which will impact millions of people every day, will begin on Sept. 1 with a six-month warning period before tickets are issued.
“You can’t be distracted,” Gov. Henry McMaster said at a ceremony marking the new law last month. “It’s just common sense, but sometimes it takes a law to remind everybody of that common sense.”

That means no holding the phone to talk, texting, emailing, browsing social media, or watching videos or video calls when driving.
